Solstice and Sustainability
Since the beginning we have always had the question of how can we build Solstice Blends as a business to not only create healthy products for people but in a way that does not harm the planet.
With the purpose of furthering our education on sustainability, Solstice then chose and was accepted on the Impact Hub Sustainability Business Incubator. Through this program we established three pillars of focus for our sustainability journey as a company, these are Waste Reduction, Responsible Sourcing and Carbon Neutral.
With Waste Reduction, we plan to make our packaging 100% compostable by 2023. We are now switching our packaging to compostable bags and our measuring scoops to a bamboo fiber scoop. So once you’re done with the product, it won’t add to the waste of the world.
With Responsible Sourcing, we have researched for natural ingredients from their original native regions from different countries all over the world. We also focus on sourcing from small farms as well as local communities. We are proud to bring the healthiest organic superfood ingredients for all 6 of our latte blends to you.
With Carbon Neutral, for the past few years, we have partnered with Treedom, a platform that allows us to plant trees in different countries. So far to date we have planted a small handful of trees to offset our carbon footprint and plan is to plant 180 trees each year by using Treedom.
Why Treedom?
Treedom is an offsetting project that helps combat global climate change as well as care for local communities. By partnering with Treedom, we have helped local people to make their earnings thanks to the tree’s produce. Moreover, we believe that the trees planted in Treedom will reduce emissions and make the world a cleaner place.
Why are we planting trees?
The trees that are planted through Treedom absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and to date we have planted 10 trees in 3 different countries: 5 Cacao trees in Cameroon, 1 Coffee tree in Haiti, 1 Lemon tree, 1 Macadamia, 1 Avocado, and 1 Croton tree which are all from Kenya. These trees so far have reduced 1,380 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere and will continue to decrease the carbon emissions.
Solstice is now heading to a future with sustainable food packaging, responsible ingredient sourcing, and partnering with an organization to offset our greenhouse gasses. PACKAGING
Packaging plays an important role in fresh produce: it extends shelf life, ensures food safety standards are met, and reduces food waste. At Solstice Blends we aim to reduce our impact on the environment while delivering quality products.
Given that all our packaging is either recyclable or reusable it is up to you to maintain the packaging effective throughout its life cycle, thus creating a closed loop of manufacturing and usage.
SOURCING
What is key to our superfood blends is having sourced the highest quality ingredients. We've researched where our blends' ingredients grow in its natural state at its best condition, freshest and purest form and sourced it from there. We believe this method produces healthier food rich in nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and omega-3s. Organic farming pays close attention to nature with a socially responsible approach by respecting wildlife and biodiversity. This way of farming promotes better soil, it does not pollute waterways, uses less energy and its produces last longer. This system avoids the use of artificial fertilizers (fewer chemicals), pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), irradiation, growth regulators, industrial solvents, synthetic food enhancers and preservatives.
CERTIFICATIONS
We recognize how important it is for a food product to be certified. At the moment we are sourcing all of our ingredients from organic suppliers and are working towards all the respective certifications as we grow as a small business.
